How to Make a Clay Water Fountain
Instructions:
1. Begin by using the clay to form the basin of the fountain. This is the pond
where the water from the fountain will collect. Make sure you make it wide
enough to include a section for the small water fountain pump, which we will
hide later, as well as a decorative bowl that will be showing. It should also be
deep enough to allow the pump to be fully submerged.
2. Create a dome shaped out of clay that is open in the back with a space large
enough to easily install the pump. The dome should attach to the floor and
mold to the sides of the basin. Use your clay tools to form holes in the dome
to allow the water to pass easily from the front to the back of the
basin.
3. Now for the creative part. Using clay, create the details of the fountain you
would like. You can create a statuette from which the water will flow. You can
create levels were the water will tumble from one to the next as it falls toward
the basin. You can create or add decorative pieces or figures to sit around the
edges of your fountain. Make sure you create a place at the top of the fountain
where the water will be coming from.
4. Fire the clay. Most ceramic shops will do this for you for a small fee. Glaze
the fountain and then have it glaze-fired. Again, your local ceramic shop can
help you with this.
5. Install the water pump behind the dome. Insert the end of the tube to the place
designed to have the water emerge. Caulk it into place. Allow the caulking time
to dry.
6. Fill the basin with water. Plug in the
pump. Add more water as needed.
